Holy Semester, Batman!

So, I guess school just started. At least that's what it seemed like this week: I had to show up at a certain time and sit in a couple uncomforatble chairs for a couple hours.

My advice: just say no. School is crazy and it never ends (at least for people like me).

Oh yeah, the company I work for just got bought so I had to go to work at a new office this week. That was fun. I met a few nice people this week, but they stuck me in a tiny cramped office with three other people--yeah it rocks (not).

I'm trying to scare them all away right now. I installed FreeBSD on my desktop machine, so I just play around with settings all day and it looks like work. So far I haven't been able to concentrate enough to get any real work done (one of my office-mate's music sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard). I think my scare tactics are working since they don't really talk to me and when they talk to each other, it seems like they're trying not to involve me.

I guess it's okay that they're scared of me, I'm this new unknown thing invading what was "their" territory. Now this programmer--who used to be a big portion of their competition--is sitting two feet away.

I figured out why they need three people to do what I did on my own. I heard one ask another a question about a topic so fundamental to the process of serving web pages, I couldn't believe he would have been hired to create web pages. It's like I'm sitting in class surrounded by people who can't understand what the teacher has been talking about for weeks--and they're supposed to go get jobs after this is all done!! It boggles the mind how non-computer people get paid to work with upper-level computing concepts.

Yeah, so for the first time in ten years, I now dread going to work. I used to look forward to learning new things and solving new problems. Now, I just cringe at the thought of squeezing into that already too cramped office and trying to have a go at writing coherent software.

This week I'm planning on asking for a cubicle next to all the office people. Or better yet, maybe they'll let me work from home! Otherwise, I'm going to bomb out of this job really quickly.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi!
